| Highlight of Valentine's Day.....
going to morning gatahering and hearing the announcement that intramurals are cancelled and we should all go back to bed....half a snow day of sorts.
Lowlight of Valentine's Day....
Talking all day about our special crab leg and prime rib Valentine's feast for dinner, then having the KP (kitchen patrol) team jack around to the point where Mark, the chef, cancels dinner to teach them a lesson. Went from prime rib and crab legs to PB&J and cereal.

| Been almost three months since my last post, and it's been crazy. Finished off my first trimester, sent one graduate off into the world (but still keeping in touch....thanks, myspace.) Had a snowy break in Denver with the folks, shoveled at least 4 feet of snow, and watched far too many episodes of the Gilmore Girls.
And now a month back into classes. Am teaching for the first time, a class on Sports and Society called, "Who's Got Game?" Am co-teaching with my roomate, the fitness and health Fellow. She has a Pollyanna view of sports, and I have a cynical view, so it's a healthy balance. And we get to give assignments like, "Watch the Superbowl" or "go to the Nuggets game," which the students respond well to. Plus, only five students in the class...we are spoiled here.
My favorite quote from the class, discussing whether athletes are necessarily role models:
Emily: Okay, so if athletes play sports, what do politicians do? Student: They politate. (pause...smile) Emily: Yes, they do.
"POLITATE" is written on the board.
Also got a new class in this January. They are currently in the back country, wandering somewhere in the wilderness of Arizona. Pictures taken prior to their 6 am departure last Saturday.
And this is Calvin, whose little brother Corey is in the group preparing to leave, letting me he got up at "five in the mornin'" to see his little brother off. That's brotherly love.
More pics, this time from the Super Bowl party at Willow House (where the Fellows live). We fed them lots of refined sugars (a treat here, where we're all about whole grains and organic foods) so it was the loudest Super Bowl party in the history of the world.
Well, that's all for now. This trimester's been crazy busy, and I'm logging around 80 hours/week, but it seems sustainable as long as I get enough sleep. So life is good in Colorado.

| Student: Emily, can I use your phone? I need to call the video place to see if they have any Van Damme movies. Emily: Sure thing. Student: [dials] Yeah, hi. Um, do you carry old movies? [video guy replies] Yeah, old movies.....like movies from the 90's?

| So our community has been presented with an opportunity to re-evaluate our rules and consequences, pretty much from scratch. Currently, we have five non-negotiables on campus: no sex, tobacco, violence, drugs, or alcohol. To go about revising this piece of our culture, we are using a proposal process. 21 proposals were received and emailed out to the community. The following proposal is in response to the question:
What should the Eagle Rock community (staff and students) be obligated to?
21. Eagle Rock should permit off-campus sex 3 weekends per trimester under the following conditions: a. Students are over 18 b. Students have 0 dings (dings are given to students for tardies, nonparticipation, or unprepared-ness) c. Students are doing well in community. d. Students write proposal to head of school. e. Student signs pregnancy / disease waiver. f. Parents give permission.
My question is....does the school cover hotel fees and transportation to and from the "off-campus" site? And does everyone have to have sex on the same three weekends each trimester? | | |
